ADHD and Hypnotherapy: SFH for calmer focus and resilience

  • Broader impact of ADHD on mental health: ADHD goes beyond focus difficulties, increasing risk of Anxiety, Depression, substance misuse, low self-esteem, and challenges in emotional regulation and relationships.
  • Dopamine and ADHD: Dopamine regulation can be less efficient in the ADHD brain, affecting motivation and sustained attention, not as a flaw but a difference in information processing.
  • Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) approach: SFH combines neuroscience-based explanations with relaxation and focused techniques to help clients regain a sense of control.
  • Therapeutic benefits of hypnotherapy: Hypnotherapy calms the mind, reduces stress, and helps ’empty the stress bucket,’ creating space for clearer thinking and more balanced emotions.
  • Invitation to explore SFH: Clients are encouraged to take small, manageable steps toward their preferred future, with a complimentary discovery video call.

In my practice, I’ve recently been working with a number of clients diagnosed with ADHD. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is often associated with difficulties in focus and impulsivity, but its impact goes far beyond that. It can have wide-ranging effects on mental health, and while some individuals manage well, many experience additional challenges, particularly without the right support in place.
ADHD is commonly linked with an increased risk of other mental health conditions, including Anxiety, Depression, and substance misuse, where alcohol or drugs may be used as a way to cope. Alongside this, many clients struggle with low self-esteem and persistent self-criticism, often stemming from years of feeling misunderstood or “not good enough.” Emotional regulation can also be difficult, with heightened sensitivity, frustration, or overwhelm appearing quickly and sometimes intensely. Over time, this can contribute to chronic stress, burnout, and difficulties in maintaining relationships, both personally and professionally.
An important piece of the ADHD puzzle lies in the brain’s relationship with dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for motivation, reward, and focus. In the ADHD brain, dopamine regulation can be less efficient, which may lead to difficulties in sustaining attention, seeking stimulation, or feeling motivated by everyday tasks. This is not a flaw, but a difference in how the brain processes information and reward.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH) offers a gentle yet effective way to support clients in understanding these patterns. By combining neuroscience-based explanations with relaxation and focused techniques, clients can begin to regain a sense of control. Hypnotherapy helps to calm the mind, reduce the build-up of stress, and “empty the stress bucket,” creating space for clearer thinking and more balanced emotional responses.
From this calmer state, clients are empowered to take small, manageable steps toward their preferred future – building confidence, resilience, and a more positive outlook along the way. If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply curious about how hypnotherapy could help you move forward, I invite you to take the first step today. The Power of Positive Thinking

What a Legend!

This is my Nana, an incredible woman with a remarkable  mindset. Her positivity and zest for life were truly inspiring, and they remained strong even as she grew older. She stayed active, working as a hairdresser well into her 80s and swimming and dancing into her 90s!

I don’t recall her ever being ill or complaining. She is someone I often think about, and I hope to  follow in her footsteps. I’m dedicating the first blog on my new website to my Nana, Dorothy Hill.

The Power of Positive Thinking: How Hypnotherapy Can Transform Your Mindset

We all experience moments of doubt, negativity, and self-criticism. Whether it’s worrying about the future, reflecting on past mistakes, or doubting your capabilities, negative thinking can often feel like a constant companion. However, the good news is that your mindset doesn’t have to be a prison—it can be transformed. One of the most powerful tools available to help shift your mindset toward positivity is solution-focused hypnotherapy.

In this blog, we’ll explore the incredible power of positive thinking and how hypnotherapy can help you harness that power to create lasting change in your life.

The Science Behind Positive Thinking

Positive thinking isn’t just a feel-good concept—there’s solid scientific research supporting its benefits. When you focus on positive thoughts, you activate the brain’s reward system, releasing “feel-good” chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. These chemicals not only boost your mood but also promote overall well-being, lower stress levels, and improve cognitive function.

On the other hand, negative thinking can trigger the release of stress hormones like cortisol, which can impair cognitive performance, affect your physical health, and hinder personal growth. Over time, habitual negative thinking can become a default mindset, limiting your potential and leading to feelings of helplessness and anxiety.

What is Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy?

Solution-focused hypnotherapy is a powerful therapeutic approach that focuses on the present and future, rather than dwelling on past problems. It’s designed to help you identify and achieve your goals by changing the way you think and feel.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, which often focuses on analyzing past experiences, solution-focused hypnotherapy uses the state of hypnosis—a deeply relaxed yet focused state of mind—to access the subconscious and reframe negative thought patterns. In this relaxed state, you are more open to suggestion and able to challenge limiting beliefs or negative thoughts that have been holding you back.

How Hypnotherapy Changes Your Mindset

Hypnotherapy works with your subconscious mind to replace negative thoughts and beliefs with positive, empowering ones. Here’s how it can help:

  1. Rewiring Negative Thought Patterns
Hypnotherapy helps you become aware of the automatic negative thoughts that run through your mind. Once these patterns are identified, we can work to reframe them. Through positive suggestions, guided imagery, and visualization, your mind begins to internalize new, healthier ways of thinking. Over time, you’ll find it easier to focus on the positive rather than the negative.
  2. Building Confidence and Self-Belief
Low self-esteem or a lack of confidence often stems from deeply ingrained negative thoughts. Hypnotherapy can help you develop a stronger sense of self-worth by guiding you through visualizations where you see yourself achieving your goals, feeling confident, and capable. This shift in perspective allows you to break free from self-doubt and embrace new opportunities.
  3. Creating a Growth Mindset
A growth mindset is the belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through effort and learning. Hypnotherapy encourages this mindset by helping you see setbacks as opportunities for growth, rather than failures. With a more positive outlook, you’ll be better equipped to face challenges and embrace change with optimism.
  4. Reducing Stress and Anxiety
Negative thinking often fuels stress and anxiety. By using relaxation techniques within hypnotherapy, you can activate the body’s relaxation response, which calms the nervous system and reduces the physical symptoms of stress. In this state of calm, it’s easier to shift your focus away from worries and towards more positive, constructive thoughts.
  5. Setting and Achieving Goals
Hypnotherapy isn’t just about eliminating negative thinking—it’s also about actively building a mindset focused on success. Through guided hypnosis, you can visualize achieving your goals, from small personal victories to larger life ambitions. This process strengthens your belief that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to, which increases motivation and perseverance.

A Solution-Focused Approach to Lasting Change

One of the greatest benefits of solution-focused hypnotherapy is its focus on the future. Rather than getting bogged down in past struggles or mistakes, it empowers you to look forward and create the future you desire. By focusing on solutions and positive outcomes, hypnotherapy helps you build a mindset that supports your personal growth and success.
